Back Edge is a large open space in the north of Sheffield. The site is classified as a Site of Scientific Interest, and is home to species of rare bell heather and heathland.
Young people participated in a recent project on the site to construct an area of hard-standing around a bench and information board. The hard standing will enable people to gain access to the site and enjoy the view across Sheffield. They also installed a vehicle barrier and cleared vegetation from the steps and hedge.
The young people were involved in the planning, design and construction of the surface, and had to master a varied range of skills, including woodworking and landscaping. As part of the project the young people were able to gain a unit of the NVQ in Construction of Structures and Surfaces.
